In the new Showtime series, “The Power of the Dog,” Benedict Cumberbatch plays a disgraced lawman in the Wild West who is forced to return to his hometown for fear of his own death. It’s been described as an old western sprinkled with a dash of sci-fi magic that features a metaphor about time travel. Cumberbatch explains “what it’s been described as is a western sprinkled with a dash of sci-fi magic that features a metaphor about time travel. Because when time travels back into the future, it’s devastating to see other people and other events that are running through our past, going and affecting the things that were going on in our present moment. So it’s a metaphor as well as a serialized story that has those elements to it.”

Fox’s Geneva Overholser sits down with Benedict Cumberbatch in this edition of Studio B. Overholser explains “this is a very pointed commentary in terms of our society, our policing of our communities. Cumberbatch answers “I think the show certainly touches on a broad range of very common problems and concerns. It’s dealing with the way we decide to behave as a community under certain circumstances and how it deals with those things and reacts to them. The show, what’s been described as a powerful thriller doesn’t just delve into those issues, you get the gut-punch on some of the violence, because the way that things are set up for a gun battle, is brutally graphic on it’s face as an example of how violent our society is now.”
