Rodrigo Duterte is the 12th Philippine president, elected to a six-year term in 2016 and currently in his third term.
He frequently vocalizes his right-wing views, occasionally dropping anti-American and anti-Muslim statements — but Duterte has been all over the news in recent months for his post-election drug crackdown in which thousands of Filipinos have been killed.
Despite a lack of national interest in Philippines elections in 2013, when it only secured 67 seats in Congress, the Philippines experienced a major political rapprochement when Duterte’s party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) captured over 80 seats in the country’s only unicameral Congress.
3. He was the country’s prosecutor, before becoming mayor of Davao
Born to a poor family, Duterte rose through the ranks of the military through various military battalions before he became the city’s mayor, in 1989. He has spoken openly about his love for guns.
After his election to congress, in 2001, he became the city’s mayor for a second time. It was here, after his crushing victory in a 2001 presidential primary, that the city’s controversial crime rates began to skyrocket.
